Hardware doesn't work.

How do you say something special about a news van? You can't. People don't care. Research has showed us that people don't recall hardware as a brand benefit. Plus any shiny new ENG toy will be in the hands of your competitor soon (if it's not already). When given the task to promote the new backpack tech that allows live shots anywhere a cellphone can go, I was intrigued, but not sold. Thankfully the news van also included our station's senior news anchor, Ken Bastida.

Experience is Beautiful

The assignment: Acknowledge the collective experience of our CBS5/KCBS reporters and anchors while tying in the collective power of our partnership. Sounds bland, unemotional and uninspiring - right? I decided to tackle the problem by getting as close to it as possible. The anchors and reporters boldly stood in for our slo-mo close-ups and gave me more than I expected. Shot with the C300, at 40fps, field stuff at 24.

Blocking and Tackling

This wave of new spots has been a sort of return to promo basics for a bit. The challenge here is to present reporters and anchors doing what they do - while attempting to avoid the dreaded promo cliches. Promo cliches include : running with a camera, talking on the phone and catching babies as they're thrown from burning buildings. You can count some unavoidable cliches in this collection of spots, hopefully you'll also see some original shots thrown in as well.

Emmy night 2011

We had quite a night Saturday.

4 nominations in 4 promo categories and 3 wins! It was great, unexpected and as usual a bit surreal.

We won the campaign categories for both news and program promotion and single spot program promotion.

"KBCW Image campign" "CBS5 Stay Connected (San Bruno, Good Question, Consumer1)" and "Nikita Noname" were all winning entries. This night also saw the first emmy wins for two of my Podsquad alumni: Gairo Cuevas and Clark Todd both pulled down their first statuettes, while Shadi Haddad pulled down #5. Also Jesse Dana my DP on these spots got his first and second emmy on our ticket -It was a great night to share with the team-  I'm proud of all these guys.

CONSUMER VOLUNTEERS

I have a lot of respect for these folks. Volunteering to dig through mountains of red tape to help anyone who calls in. This spot features our collection of former judges, lawyers, and accountants who are the backbone of our consumer help unit.
